Daniela Ferdico's PledgePage - Climbing for Clean Air!
Yes, I will be attempting to climb to the Summit of Mt. Rainer in July 2002. No, I have never climbed before, but feel very strongly about this fundraiser for the American Lung Association. I know I myself take it for granted that I can take a full breath most of the time, and the occasional asthma attacks I get (not very often) are a poignant reminder to those who battle with breathing every day of their life. I can’t imagine what it must be like to not breathe normally everyday of your life! In order to do my part (climb to the summit of The Mountain I must raise $3500.00, so I need your help! The money raised will help:
Bring greater attention to and fight the increasing air pollution in our area. Over the past 15+ years, the number of days Mt. Rainier has been visible from Sea-Tac Airport has decreased from 60 to below 40 days during the months of April to October. Air quality meters were placed at Paradise on Mt. Rainier due to this increase in smog. Helping to prevent lung diseases such as asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, lung cancer, tuberculosis and cystic fibrosis. These various forms of lung disease accounted for 32% of infant deaths, making it the number one killer of babies under the age of one. Helping to reduce tobacco use, especially among young people, which is responsible for 419,000 deaths in the US each year. Tobacco causes more deaths than cocaine, heroin, alcohol, homicide, suicide, traffic accidents, fires and AIDS combined. In order to make the climb successful and reasonable, I have been training several times a week, including climbing to the summit of Mt. Si and many other climbs. I am doing yoga and ballet to increase my agility and balance and walking, and taking additional classes to increase my cardiovascular endurance. I hope you will find it worthwhile to aid me in completing my conquest, and supporting the American Lung Association of Washington - the first step was to contact you - the next step is yours to take. Any amount of contribution would be greatly appreciated; however, anyone that donates $50 or more will travel with me on the mountain by being able to sign the bandana I will be wearing. You can sponsor in whichever format is most convenient for you - cash, check (made payable to the American Lung Association of Washington), or credit card. You can make credit card payments by clicking on the donate link on the left! All donations will receive an official receipt and remember that all contributions are 100% tax-deductible. Thank you in advance for all of your support and generosity. Regardless of my excitement to embark on this adventure, I realize that I could not do this without all of your help and any contribution whatsoever is greatly appreciated. Daniela Ferdico |
